How did the planet get its name?
In accordance with all the other planets seen in the sky, this new world was given a name from Greek and Roman mythology — Neptune who was the Roman god of the sea, identified with the Greek Poseidon. The demand for a mythological name seemed to be in keeping with the nomenclature of the other planets, all of which, except for Earth, were named for Greek and Roman mythology.
